I like to think it was in homage to Johnny Cash. Probably not, but thats what I like to think.

Because it's better than the alternatives.

Or maybe his black attire was worn in homage to THE BLACK.

my thought was always that also - as well as the fact black hides armpit sweat stains so very well.
